As winter is fast approaching our team at ProTecBoliers thought it would be a good idea to share some tips for preparing your plumbing for the winter months. This will help you prevent burst pipes which can end up costing thousands of pounds to repair not just the damage to the pipe and plumbing system but also all the water damage the leak causes as well.

Winter Plumbing Preparations

Prepare outdoor taps – remove any hoses and ensure that they are drained, it is a good idea to store them in a shed or other dry place, this should be done before the first freeze.

Fix Leaks – Any minor leaks that you have been putting of getting repaired, you should do this before the cold weather gets here. Not only could a leaking pipe impact on the running efficiency of your heating system but it could also quickly get a lot worse and before you know it you’re dealing with a burst pipe and a lot of water damage. It is also worth inspecting all of your pipes checking for leaks you may not yet know about.

Insulate pipes – Any pipes that are either outdoors or in unheated parts of your home it is always a good idea to keep them well insulated. This will help prevent pipes freezing which almost always result in a burst pipe! You can buy lagging from your local DIY shop but if you are unsure on what to do you can call out your local plumber to come and properly insulate pipes for you.

Boiler Service – You should have your boiler serviced at least once every year. This helps detect any problems your boiler may be having, and they can be repaired quickly before they turn into more serious and expensive problems. If you haven’t already had your boiler serviced it is recommended you do so before the winter weather kicks in, there’s no good time for a boiler to break down but the middle of winter is certainly one of the worst!

Going Away For Winter – If your property is going to be unattended for a period of time over the winter months then you should turn off the water to your property completely and also consider having your local plumber to come out and drain the pipes, this saves you coming home to any nasty surprises!
